The state of the economy has many of us watching our spending carefully and cutting back or eliminating “extras” like dining out, going to the movies and impulse shopping.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, some might be tempted to skip celebrating altogether and save the money for the “bigger” holidays like Mother and Father’s Day. But, finding and giving a gift that is special and unique doesn’t have to be expensive.

I found three wonderful shops on Etsy, the site for all things handmade, whose owners are from San Diego. These women have beautiful shops with gifts that are very reasonably priced.

Karen has three Etsy shops but I first noticed Ocean Bay Designs. Karen is a married mom of three and a first grade teacher. She’s been collecting and selling costume jewelry for six years but has only been making her own pieces for six months. Her pieces are a mix of metals, lampwork beads and semi precious stones.

Rachel’s shop is Legion Creative. She is a blogger and graphic designer from Las Vegas who uses the shop as her creative outlet. She offers jewelry and prints and will be adding more artwork and note cards to the store.
